The Biblical story of Noah's Ark tells of a dove that was released from the ark for the purpose of finding land. When the dove returns carrying an olive branch, Noah knew that the Great Flood had receded and land was near (Genesis 8:11).

The dove has also become widely accepted as a symbol of peace and the phrase "extend an olive branch", an offering of peace from one person to another.
